WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Another slow start plagued the Northwestern women's soccer team Friday afternoon, as the Wildcats dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 22 Purdue in at the Purdue Soccer Complex.
NU fell to 3-6-1 overall (1-4 Big Ten) with its fifth loss in six matches, while the Boilermakers improved to 7-2-1 (3-1-1 Big Ten).
The Wildcats put themselves in a hole almost immediately, surrendering a goal just 1:27 into the match and then falling behind 2-0 before the match was 20 minutes old.
Tari St. John put the Boilermakers up in the second minute with her first goal of the season. The goal, at 1:27, was the second-fastest for an NU opponent against the Wildcats.
At the 19:25 mark, St. John had one of the assists as Chrissy Creamer netted her second of the season to give Purdue a two-goal edge.
Northwestern was able to answer in the 78th minute, when Kristen Pearce (Morrison, Colo./Bear Creek) finished a feed from Molly Maxfield (Denver, Colo./East). Pearce drew out Purdue keeper Jocelyn Cavalier and buried the ball behind her for a slow-rolling score.
The Wildcats outshot Purdue 8-4 in the second half and 10-9 for the match but could not get the equalizer.
"We just came out flat again today, and it hurt us," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "We had a great second half again, but it was too late. We really need to fix that problem."
Anne Helm (Newton, Mass./Newton North) was in goal for NU and had two saves. She was matched in that department by Cavalier.
The Wildcats remain in the Hoosier State for Sunday's match at Indiana. Kickoff at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington is 4 p.m.
