IOWA CITY, Iowa - Sophomore Ashleigh Garmon (Oxnard, Calif./Buena) scored the game's only goal as the Northwestern women's soccer team defeated Iowa, 1-0, Friday night in Iowa City.
The win improved NU to 3-4-1 overall (1-2 Big Ten), as the Wildcats snapped a three-match losing streak. It also marked Northwestern's first win over Iowa since the 1998 season. The Hawkeyes fell to 4-4-0 (0-3 Big Ten).
Garmon's goal, which was credited as an unassisted goal, came in the 57th minute off a corner kick. Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North) sent the kick in, and it was headed on goal by Molly Greene (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). That effort was saved by Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele, and then another shot from Kate Ghidinelli (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) was deflected by a Hawkeye defender. That put the ball at Garmon's feet, and she was true from five yards out for the winner.
The goal was Garmon's fifth this season, the most by a Northwestern player in a season since Brooke Bell netted five in 1999.
In a match that was evenly played -- NU outshot the Hawkeyes, 14-11 -- Garmon's goal held up thanks to sophomore goalkeeper Anne Helm (Newton, Mass./Newton North). Making her first collegiate start, Helm came up with five saves and earned her first solo shutout.
At the other end, Vogele had nine stops for Iowa.
"The game was a good one, just as I expected it would be," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "It was fairly even, although I thought we might have had a few better opportunities. But it's nice to get a win, especially on the road. We need to try and use this momentum heading into Sunday."
Northwestern is in action Sunday at Illinois, which will be missing starting goalkeeper Leisha Alcia who is with the Canadian National Team. Kickoff in Champaign is slated for 2 p.m.
