EVANSTON, Ill. - In Friday's Big Ten-opening loss to defending champion Penn State, the Northwestern women's soccer team allowed the Nittany Lions to build a two-goal lead before dominating the match and making it a battle.

On Sunday against Ohio State, the Wildcats followed a similar pattern. And while the Buckeyes never scored an insurance third goal late in the going, they were able to hold off Northwestern and escape Lakeside Field with a 2-1 victory.

The loss dropped NU to 2-4-1 overall, 0-2 in the Big Ten. The match was the Big Ten opener for the Buckeyes (3-4-0 overall).

Ohio State got on the board in the 20th minute, taking advantage of its speed to get behind the Northwestern defense. Colleen Hoban sprung Lisa Grubb for a breakaway, and Grubb -- last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year -- pushed the ball past NU goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the second half, but OSU doubled its lead in the 51st minute when Kiley Enmark one-timed a pass from about 25 yards out on the left side. Sophomore Anne Helm (Newton, Mass./Newton North), making her season debut in the NU goal in the second half, had no chance as it found the far corner.

Northwestern went right to work and got one of the goals back less than three minutes later. Tabitha Lowey (Peachtree City, Ga./Mcintosh) crossed a ball from the left side, and in front of the goal Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North) left it for junior Kristen Pearce (Morrison, Colo./Bear Creek), who looped a shot over Buckeye goalkeeper Jen Heaney.

Both teams had nice chances down the stretch, but that was all the scoring for the day.

Northwestern continues with Big Ten play next weekend, hitting the road to meet Iowa Friday night and then Illinois Sunday in Champaign.
