Men's Swimming and Diving Tops Iowa, 188-162

IOWA CITY, Iowa - It was another season-best day for the Northwestern men's swimming and diving team, as they concluded a two-day dual meet by defeating Iowa, 188-162.
Two Wildcats posted NCAA "B" standard times-junior Mike Shue (Ft. Myers, Fla./Ft. Myers) with a win in the 500 freestyle (4:26.72), and sophomore Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) with a win in the 200 backstroke (1:47.24). Both were season-best times among the team.
In all, NU (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) won five of the nine events that took place on Saturday, including the 400 free relay, which posted a season-best time of 3:03.30. The 200 medley relay team came in second but also had a season-best time of 1:32.36.
Sophomore Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) won the 100 butterfly with a team season-best and a personal career-best time of 49.48.
Swanson also took first in the 100 free (45.43), bringing his two-day victory total to four with two victorious relay events.
Other notable performances were turned in by sophomore Aaron McCracken (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), who had a season-best time in the 200 breaststroke (2:03.84), and Nick Eggen (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia), who placed third in both the 200 back and the 400 IM with personal-best times. His 400 IM time (4:08.79) was nine seconds ahead of his previous season-best time.
The Wildcats will now focus on the Big Ten Championships, which begin Feb. 28 in Bloomington, Ind.
