EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern and Wisconsin-Milwaukee battled to a 1-1 draw today at Lakeside Field. It marked the fourth tie of the season for both the Wildcats (4-8-4) and the Panthers (7-5-4).
Northwestern got on the board first, when freshman Kate Ghidinelli (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) notched her first collegiate goal in the 31st minute. The play was started along the right side by Ashleigh Garmon (Oxnard, Calif./Buena), who played a ball across that was one-timed by Tabitha Lowey (Peachtree City, Ga./Mcintosh) to an oncoming Ghidinelli. Her shot slipped under the goalkeeper's right side.
It stayed that way until halftime, but UWM did not need long in the second stanza to get back level. A seemingly harmless throw-in became a penalty kick when the ball bounced off the ground and hit a Wildcat defender's hand. Amber Jelinek converted the PK to the right side.
Both teams pressed the play as regulation closed, but NU goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and UWM backstop Molly Schneider were equal to every effort. McCreery finished the match with three saves, while Schneider-who replaced Panther starter Mary Duffy at halftime-had three stops. Duffy stopped two Wildcat shots in the first half.
Northwestern is off for the rest of the weekend, before travelling to Wyoming and Colorado College next weekend for a pair of nonconference matchups.
