Softball Falls Twice to Long Beach State

EVANSTON, Ill. -
The Northwestern softball team lost two games to Long Beach State Monday afternoon in Long Beach, Calif. They lost the first game, 6-3, and the second, 4-3.
In game one, Northwestern scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Andria Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./Westchester) singled down the left field line to bring home Gretchen Barnes (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). Long Beach State answered in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game and took the lead with three more runs in the fifth. The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the sixth off Barnes' first home run of the season to pull within one. Long Beach State pulled away from the `Cats with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the 6-3 win.
For the Wildcats, Barnes went 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs, two RBI and one homer. Caruthers went 1-for-1 and left fielder Rane Gunderson (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) was 2-for-2. Brie Brown (Nashville, Tenn./Harputh Hall) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs.
In game two, Long Beach State kept the momentum from the first game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Wildcats responded in the fifth, scoring three runs to tie the game. In the fifth, Barnes hit a bases-loaded single, bringing home Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik). An error by Long Beach State's left fielder brought home Caruthers and freshman Carri Leto (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla). Long Beach State answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning for the win when Jaclyn Fredrickson scored on a wild pitch from sophomore Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill).
Barnes led the `Cats at the plate going 1-for-2 with one RBI. Leto was 2-for-4 and Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif./Serra) went 1-for-3 with a double. Brown pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs. Schwendimann pitched 1.1 innings with one hit.
The Wildcats fell to 6-8 and have lost six straight games. They are in action Tuesday in Fullerton, Calif., when they face Washington at 5 p.m., and CSU-Fullerton at 9 p.m., CST.
