Luke Donald Named Finalist For Sullivan Award

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's golfer Luke Donald was named one of 10 candidates for the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, given to the top amateur athlete of 2000. The Sullivan Award, presented by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), recognizes athletes who have achieved athletic excellence and exhibit leadership, character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism.
The other nine first-round finalists are Shane Battier (basketball), Lisa Fernandez (softball), Rulon Gardner (wrestling), Josh Heupel (football), Lenny Krzyzelburg (swimming), Stephen Lopez (taekwondo), Tara Nott (weightlifting), Christi Smith (track & field), and Laura Wilkinson (diving).
Narrowed from a field of 30 nominees, the 10 first-round finalists will be reduced to five athletes whose names will be released in mid-March. From the five names, the National winner will be formally announced in early April in New York City.
