EVANSTON, ILL. - Northwestern pounded out three home runs in game one, and another in game two in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Ohio State. The Wildcats improve to 22-19 (10-4 Big Ten) while the Buckeyes drop to 24-22 (4-9).
In game one, Northwestern fell behind 1-0 before putting up four runs in the second inning. Rane Gunderson (Minnetonka, Minn.) doubled home two runs in the inning as the `Cats took advantage of a pair of Buckeye errors in the inning. Ohio State would come back, however, getting three runs in the fourth of starter Brie Brown (Nashville, Tenn.) to tie the game. A leadoff home run in the top of the fifth by Kristine Himes gave OSU a 5-4 lead, but Brown would settle down and the Wildcat bats would come to life. A three-run homer by Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif.) capped a six-run fifth inning and gave NU a 10-5 lead. They would end the game in the sixth, thanks to two more long balls. Brooke Siebel (Brentwood, Tenn.) connected on her fourth homer of the season, and after a walk to Tami Jones (West Hills, Calif.), Jenn Shull (San Jose, Calif.) launched a two-run shot to leftcenter as the game ended due to the eight-run rule. Brown went the distance to improve to 8-9 on the season.
Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif.), who fired a perfect game against Michigan on Sunday, was the story in game two. Schwendimann held Ohio State hitless for the first four innings before settling for a two-hit shutout to run her record to 12-9 on the year. Sophomore Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas) gave Schwendimann all the offense she would need with a solo home run in the first inning. A Siebel single brought home a run in the third and they added another in the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead. An RBI-triple by Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif.) and a single by Mikie Chambers (Country Club Hills, Ill.) gave NU a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Northwestern returns to action tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game against Penn State at Anderson Field.
