EVANSTON, ILL. - Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas) hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth to give Northwestern a 3-2 victory over visiting Penn State. The win was the fifth in a row for the Wildcats as they improved to 23-19 (11-4 Big Ten). Penn State fell to 31-15 (9-5).
Northwestern drew first blood in the second inning. Brooke Siebel (Brentwood, Tenn.) led off with a single to left. Tami Jones (West Hills, Calif.) sacrificed Siebel to second base and Jenn Shull (San Jose, Calif.) drew a walk to give NU runners at first and second. Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a soft single to center to score Siebel, and the throw home allowed Schulz and Shull to advance to second and third, respectively. Jessie Wellnitz (Waterloo, Iowa) came in to pinch-run for Shull, and she scored on a wild pitch to give the `Cats a 2-0 lead. Penn State scored an unearned run in the fourth to close the gap to 2-1 and they looked to break the game open in the sixth. Three consecutive Nittany Lion singles produced the tying run. After a walk, Penn State had the bases loaded with one out. However, Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif.) buckled down, retiring the final two batters on force plays at the plate to keep the game tied, 2-2. That set up Jancic's heroics in the bottom of the inning as she deposited Jaci Kalp's 3-2 pitch over the fence in leftcenter to extend her hitting streak to a career-high 17 games.
The two teams conclude their weekend series tomorrow with a single game beginning at noon.
