EVANSTON, ILL. - The Northwestern softball team opened its six-game California trip by splitting a doubleheader at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. Northwestern's record now stands at 7-12 for the season, LMU is 17-11.
The host Lions scored three times in the third inning to break open game one. After loading the bases with two singles and a walk, Heather Gelhorn singled to drive in a pair, giving Loyola a 3-1 lead. They would add another in the inning and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for a 5-1 victory. Senior Mikie Chambers (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) drove in the only run for the Wildcats, who managed just three hits in the game.
Game two was a different story. Sophomore Gretchen Barnes (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) launched her second home run of the year and Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./ Foothill) pitched five-and-two-thirds shutout innings to lead Northwestern to a 2-0 win. Barnes' solo homer in the second inning put NU on the board. The 'Cats added another in the fifth when a Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) single plated pinch-runner Stacey Austin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) with the second run. Schwendimann was in control from the start, striking out the side in the first inning and allowing only two hits for the game as she upped her mark to 3-6 on the year. Junior Brooke Siebel (Brentwood, Tenn./Father Ryan) relieved with the bases loaded in the sixth and retired LMU's Jaime Lyons on a fly ball to center to end the inning. Siebel pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save in her first pitching appearance of the season.
Northwestern continues its swing through Southern California on Tuesday when they battle No. 1 Washington (5 p.m.) and Cal.-Fullerton (9 p.m.) on Tuesday in Fullerton.
