EVANSTON, ILL. - The Northwestern softball team pulled off a pair of stunning upsets on Wednesday, downing No. 1 Washington, 4-1, and No. 11 Cal. State-Fullerton, 5-2, in Fullerton, Calif. The first-game win snapped Washington's 24-game winning streak, while the nightcap victory extended Fullerton's losing skid to four games. Northwestern improved its record to 9-12 while Washington fell to 32-2 and Fullerton to 24-7.
The Wildcats scratched first against the top-ranked Huskies, turning a hit and an error into a run in the second inning. Washington responded in the top of the sixth, tying the game on a sacrifice fly. However, NU battled back in its half of the frame, scoring three times on two hits and an error to hand UW All-America pitcher Jamie Graves (16-1) her first loss of the season. Freshman Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) went the distance, allowing a Husky offense that had outscored its opponents 195-34 in 33 games only four hits. As a result, she improved her record to 4-6.
In the nightcap, freshman Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) stole third and scored on a throwing error by Titan catcher Michelle Leh in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie as the Wildcats defeated No. 11 Cal. State-Fullerton, 5-2. Junior Brooke Siebel (Brentwood, Tenn./Father Ryan), making her first start of the season, pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits.
