EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's swimming and diving team (5-4, 2-4 Big Ten) was defeated by visiting Iowa (2-6, 1-5), 133.5-107.5, in its final home meet of the season.
While Northwestern honored its four seniors, freshman Mike Shue (Ft. Myers, Fla./Ft. Myers) gave Wildcat fans a glimpse of the future by winning the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Shue coasted to victory in the 1,000, as his winning time of 9:29.30 was 25 seconds faster than his closest competitor. Shue also posted a career-best in the 500, finishing in 4:35.84.
Other Wildcat winners were Nick Barnes (Frankfort, Ind./ Frankfort) in the 50 free (21.54) and freshman Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./ Brophy) in the 200 butterfly (1:49.22).
Northwestern is off until Feb. 24-26 when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Big Ten Championships.
