EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern softball team gained a split for the second straight day at the GRU Softball Classic in Gainesville, Fla. The Wildcats fell to Samford in the first of two games, 5-4, but came back with a 3-0 win in the second contest.
NU is now 5-5 on the season, while Samford is 3-5.
In the first game, Northwestern took a second-inning lead when Erin Jancic singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, then stole third and took home thanks to an error by the leftfielder. Samford responded with four runs in the third inning thanks to five hits.
The Wildcats came back to tie it with a pair of runs in the fourth and another in the sixth. With two out in the fourth, Jancic doubled and Jenn Shull walked, and then both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Alyson Schulz then drove both home with a double down the left-field line.
Jancic was also the catalyst in the sixth when NU tied the game. She singled with one out and advanced to second on the play, then reached third on Shull's groundout. Schulz was hit by a pitch, then stole second and Jancic scored on the play.
In the seventh, though, Samford scored on a wild pitch with one out to re-take the lead. In the bottom half, Northwestern's Kathryn Gross walked to lead off but the next three batters went down.
Brie Brown took the loss, going the distance and allowing eight hits. Jancic had three of NU's four hits.
Both teams had three hits in Game 2, but Northwestern made theirs count in the 3-0 victory. Lauren Schwendimann got the win, striking out nine.
NU scored in the third when Gretchen Barnes doubled and later scored on Brittany Nelson's single. In the seventh, the 'Cats iced the game with a pair of runs.
The Wildcats conclude play at the GRU Classic Sunday with a doubleheader against McNeese State.
