Men's Basketball Loses in First Game at San Juan Shootout

Tavaras Hardy made eight-of-nine shots in the first half for 18 points and pulled down five boards to take the Wildcats in the lockerroom with a 28-28 tie at half against Kent State at the San Juan Shootout.
The Wildcats shot 52 percent in the first half to Kent State's 37 percent and outrebounded the Golden Flashes 18-11.
Kent State came out in the second half with a 12-1 run and shut down the Wildcat offense. Northwestern struggled to bring the ball up the court, finishing with 21 turnovers. The 'Cats made ten in row to rally back within three, 42-39, but continued to struggle offensively after that. A rally with a minute to go brought the 'Cats within three possessions, but Kent State proved to be too strong as they took the win, 67-58.
Hardy remained scoreless and without a rebound in the second half to end the game with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Ed McCants put up 11 points, six of which came in the last minute on two three-pointers. Winston Blake gathered eight points, Jitim Young six, Jason Burke five and Ben Johnson and Aaron Jennings four points apiece.
Northwestern shot 41 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Golden Flashes, 36-30. The 'Cats fell at the line, making only 9-of-19 attempts for 47 percent.
Northwestern falls to 4-5 overall and will face Iona at 2:15 central time tomorrow. Kent State improves to 6-2 overall.
