EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Winston Blake scored 15 points and freshman Ed McCants hit four 3-pointers to score 12 Saturday night as Northwestern pulled away in the second half to rout Vermont 64-42.

Northwestern (2-1) put up 28 3-point attempts, hitting 10, to win its second straight after a season-opening loss to Arkansas-Little Rock. The Wildcats were 6-of-13 from the 3-point line in the second half.

Tony Orciari scored 21 points for Vermont (1-2), which shot just 34 percent (15-for-44).

Aaron Jennings, Blake and McCants hit 3-pointers to start the Wildcats on a 13-0 first-half run. Northwestern built its lead to 11 points and was up 26-17 at halftime, despite making 4-of-15 from behind the 3-point line.

Blake and Ben Johnson hit '3's and Johnson took a backdoor pass from Tavaras Hardy for a layup to start the second half, an 8-0 run put the Wildcats up 17 and broke the game open.

McCants, who shot 4-of-6 on 3-pointers, gives the Wildcats a needed scoring option from long range.

"He can make shots and he's not afraid to take them," Northwestern coach Bill Carmody said.

"In our offense we know we have to knock down '3s' for us to win," McCants said. "I just hit the shots I took."
