Men's Swimming Clinches NU Invitational Win

With two events left to go in the three-day Northwestern Invitational, the Northwestern men led Southern Illinois by just one point. But the Wildcat men came up with a first, fourth, fifth and eighth places in the 200 butterfly to enter the final event with a comfortable lead. The Wildcats then clinched the team victory with a win in the 400 freestyle relay.
Senior Steve Steketee highlighted the Wildcat men's weekend with wins in the 200 freestyle (1:40.80) and 100 freestyle (45.82). He took third-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (50.06) and 500 freestyle (4:33.91), and anchored two winning relays (800 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay).
Other winners for the `Cats were Aaron McCracken in the 100 breaststroke (57.16), Mike Shue in the 1,000 freestyle (4:32.79) and Kellan O'Connor in the 200 butterfly (1:48.72). Each of these swimmers also put in big weekends as McCracken picked up a fourth in the 200 breaststroke, Shue took sixth in the 200 freestyle, eigth in the 200 butterfly and seventh in the 1,650 freestyle, and O'Connor placed fourth in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 100 butterfly. The winning 800 freestyle relay consisted of Tony Swanson, Shue, Shelby Clark and Steketee, while the 400 freestyle relay touched in with Swanson, Nick Barnes, Jason Merchant and Steketee.
Northwestern proved their depth as they scored numerous points in the third through tenth spots. They had at least one athlete in each final, and on many occasions swam three or four for top points. Highlighting the `Cats depth was the 500 freestyle as NU took first, third, sixth, seventh and eighth (Shue, Steketee, Clark, David Hersh and Dan Williams). The 200 freestyle saw NU swimmers touching in at first, third, fourth, sixth and seventh (Steketee, Swanson, Clark, Shue and Barnes), while the 100 breaststroke had first, third and fifth-place finishes by the `Cats (McCracken, Eugene Kim and Chris Meyer). The team victory was put into place by O'Connor, Merchant, Mark Hamming and Shue as they took first, fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 200 butterfly.
Northwestern has now taken two victories in invitationals (the NU Relays being the other win) and are 2-2 overall in dual meets and 1-2 in the Big Ten. They head to Puerto Rico before the Christmas holiday for training camp and will then hit the water on January 13 at Michigan State.
