Wildcat Swim Teams Drop Big Ten Meets

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving squads fell to Wisconsin Friday at the Norris Aquatics Center. The men lost 171-129, while the women fell 172-128.

On the men's side, the Wildcats were led by seniors Steve Steketee and Todd Capen with two wins and one second place performance each. Steketee won the 100 freestyle (45.60) and 200 freestyle (1:40.62), while taking second in the 100 butterfly (50.21). Capen was victorious in the 200 backstroke (1:51.80), the 400 IM (4:00.71) and finished second in the 100 backstroke (52.25).

Other winners for Northwestern were Mike Shue in the 1000 freestyle (9:25.78) and Kellan O'Connor in the 200 butterfly (1:48.97). Finishing second for the Wildcats were Eugene Kim (100 breaststroke), Aaron McCracken (200 breaststroke), Adam Barker (3-meter diving), O'Connor (400 IM), the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay.

Freshman Katie Simmons led the women, earning victories in the 100 (1:04.66) and 200 (2:16.64) breaststrokes. Erica Rose led a 1-2-3 Wildcat finish in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:07.77. She was followed by Vicky West and Stephanie Cranston. Other winners for Northwestern were Rachel Johnson in the 200 butterfly (2:03.12) and Tashy Bohm in the 200 backstroke (2:00.64).

Wisconsin won 21 of 32 events combined, including a perfect four for four in the relays. Ellen Stonebraker was the standout for the Badgers as she won the 100 , 200 and 500 freestyles. Stonebraker was also a member of Wisconsin's winning 400 freestyle relay team.

The Northwestern men's squad is now 2-2 overall, 1-2 in conference action, while the women fall to 0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Ten.

Both Northwestern teams will be back in action next Friday at the Northwestern Invitational. The meet starts at 6 p.m. Friday and runs through Sunday.
