Men's Swimming Opens Big Ten Season With a Split

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern Men's Swimming and Diving squad split a pair of dual meets in its Big Ten opener against Indiana and Minnesota Saturday afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center in Evanston. The Wildcats defeated Indiana, 79-61, while falling to Minnesota, 80-60, in the double-dual meet.

Senior Steve Steketee led the Wildcats with two wins and one second place performance. He won the 200 freestyle (1:40.45) and 100 freestyle (45.78) while taking second in the 100 butterfly (50.761).

Other winners for Northwestern included Kellan O'Connor in the 200 butterfly (1:49.82) and the 400 Free Relay (3:05.11), consisting of Nick Barnes, Tony Swanson, Jason Merchant and Steketee. Todd Capen smashed the field in the 400 Individual Medley (4:01.50), beating his opponents by over four seconds. Adam Kennedy led a one-two punch in the 50 freestlye, as he won in 21.03, with Barnes coming in second (21.33).

Also scoring for the Wildcats were Eugene Kim in the 100 breaststroke (2nd) and 200 breaststroke (5th), the 200 Medley Relay (2nd), Mike Shue in the 500 and 1000 freestyles (3rd), Swanson in the 100 freestyle (3rd), Elliot Massuda in 3-meter diving (3rd) and 1-meter diving (5th), Merchant in the 100 freestyle (4th) and 200 butterfly (5th), Capen in the 200 backstroke (4th) and 100 backstroke (5th), Mark Hamming in the 200 butterfly (4th) and 100 butterfly (5th), Aaron McCracken in the 100 breaststroke (4th), Shelby Clark in the 200 freestyle (5th) and O'Connor in the 200 backstroke (5th).

Minnesota won nine events to take the wins from both Northwestern and Indiana. They defeated Indiana, 91-49.

Northwestern will be back in action tomorrow at noon, as they host the NU Relays along with the women's squad. Teams participating in the Relays include Michigan State, Truman State, Illinois-Chicago and UW-Milwaukee.
