EVANSTON, Ill. -- 18th-ranked Northwestern opened their season with 2-0 triumph over Northern Illinois this afternoon in Evanston. Sophomore midfielder Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) put the Wildcats in front late in the first half, tapping in a corner kick from senior Kristen Palmer (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) in the 36th minute.
The 'Cats continued their offensive surge in the second half, but were turned away by two saves from Northern Illinois defenders. Northwestern broke through late in the second half as freshman Kelli Wilson (Fayetteville, Ark./Fayetteville) converted a nice cross from classmate Gina Napoli (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) in the 86th minute to conclude the scoring.
