John Martinez enters his sixth season with the Northwestern men’s basketball program in 2026-27 and first in his current role as an assistant coach. In his elevated role, Martinez adds on-court coaching responsibilities and a heightened role in recruiting, player development and scouting, with a large focus on international prospects.

For the prior four seasons he worked as the Basketball Video and Recruiting Operations Coordinator, where Martinez handled all video related aspects for the program and compiled extensive scouting reports and statistical analysis. He was an integral part of coaching staffs that led the Wildcats to back-to-back NCAA Tournament second round appearances. In addition to his other responsibilities, he oversaw the scout team. Martinez also led Northwestern’s on-campus recruiting efforts and assisted the staff with overseeing and managing the program’s recruiting and NCAA transfer portal databases.

Martinez originally joined the program in June of 2021 as a graduate manager for the 2021-22 campaign. Prior to his arrival in Evanston, Martinez spent four years as an undergraduate student manager at St. John’s University in Queens, New York.

Martinez earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. John’s in 2021 and a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Northwestern in 2023. He is also a member of the Latino Association of Basketball Coaches, a platform for Latino(a) coaches to connect, develop and be part of the innovative process in the game of basketball.
