NU Sports Medicine Mental Health Resources
SERVICESThe Northwestern University Sport Psychology program is housed within Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and offers comprehensive mental health and performance psychology services to support our student-athletes’ mental, emotional, and social well-being, as well as enhance performance in their academic and athletic endeavors. |
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY FOR THE STUDENT-ATHLETEStudent-athletes face unique pressures and demands associated with balancing full-time academic schedules with their sport participation. As such, they benefit from tailored assessment, treatment, and support services related to mental health and sport performance. Using psychological theory, knowledge, and skill, sport psychology addresses the interactions between psychosocial functioning and athletic performance. Student-athletes have the opportunity to meet with licensed clinical psychologists and psychiatrists with specific training in sport and performance psychology for individual counseling, performance consultation, crisis intervention, medication management, educational programs, and team consultation. Student-athletes may seek mental health treatment from a CAPS sport psychology provider for conditions such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders and/or for issues related to identity development, relationship conflict, stress, and academic difficulties. Additionally, student-athletes may seek psychological performance services to help them learn mental skills to manage performance anxiety, recover from an injury, improve performance, and gain confidence in their sport. In addition to individual services, CAPS sport psychologists also work with athletic teams providing ongoing consultation related to team performance and cultivating a healthy team culture.
CAPS sport psychologists and psychiatrists meet with student-athletes in offices at Searle Hall (CAPS main office) and Walter Athletic Center (Sports Medicine Clinic). To schedule an appointment with a CAPS sport psychology provider, student-athletes may e-mail the provider directly, schedule an initial care plan meeting online via the CAPS website, or schedule through their athletic trainer or physician. |
