NORTHWESTERN ATHLETIC TRAINING AID PROGRAM

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TRAINING AID

Students are introduced to processes and professionals within the athletic health care setting. This practicum provides opportunity for intellectual growth and personal development that extends beyond classroom courses, while integrating academic innovation, career advising, and engagement with established health care professionals.

PRACTICUM GOALS


The goals of the practicum are tied to learning outcomes for each level of educational in-services as well as the student rotations. In all cases, students are mentored and supervised by team physicians and staff athletic trainers that have the responsibility for the student-athletes’ health and care. All students will receive frequent and explicit instruction about the necessity of deferring to the judgment of the licensed, trained professionals.
 
Students will:      
  • Observe sports medicine professional practices
  • Identify injuries to their supervisors with assistance of medical professionals
  • Assist physicians and athletic training team during practices and games

SUGGESTED COURSES


  • Biological Sciences 165 – Introduction to Human Physiology
  • Biological Sciences 313 – Human Anatomy
  • Organizational Behavior 310 – Organizational Behavior

CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS


  • Dedicate 6-9 quarters
  • Minimum of three days per week in the clinical setting (average 12-15 hrs/week)
  • Successfully complete senior capstone presentation
  • Participate in one summer practicum
  • Attend in-services and complete all evaluations and/or proficiencies

APPLICATION PROCEDURE


To apply for the practicum, students will complete an application and submit it to the practicum director by mid-fall quarter of their first or second year at Northwestern. Applications can be submitted throughout the year, but will only be reviewed in the fall quarter. Students will be invited for a period of observation with current students in the practicum in October, November, and December. Select students will then be interviewed by athletic training staff members and the practicum director in January.  Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by the end of January. There will be no additional cost to students for this practicum and there will be no additional costs incurred by SCS or athletics to manage the practicum.

ATHLETIC TRAINING AID RECOGNITION


The Howard Sweeney Award of Excellence and Hoover Award for Most Improved are presented annually to recognize an athletic training aid who demonstrates excellence in the program. 

Howard Sweeney Award of Excellence

2019 Howard Sweeney Award The Howard Sweeney Award of Excellence is to recognize Athletic Training Aides who demonstrate excellence in skill proficiency, professionalism, and dedication during their undergraduate experience in the NU Sports Medicine Department. Established in 2004, this award honors Dr. Howard Sweeney. Dr. Sweeney contributed over 30 years of dedicated service to the athletic training staff, students and student-athletes at NU. Dr. Sweeney was a consultant for NU from 1964 - 1984, and was a Team Physician for NU athletics from 1984 - 2002. Dr. Sweeney continues to be a great supporter of our program.

Hoover Award for Most Improved

most improved award The Hoover Award for most improved is an award given to the student that demonstrates the greatest improvement in their education in-service performance, skill proficiency, and demonstrates of confidence in the athletic allied health care practicum.
