Private Lessons ("Fee-for-Lesson Instruction")

Student-athletes may be paid for teaching or coaching sport skills or techniques in their sport on a fee-for-lesson basis. Fee-for-lesson basis means that the student-athlete is paid directly by the participant (or their parent) and the lessons are not conducted under an umbrella organization (local sports club or recreational facility, for example). The following conditions must all be met in order for the lessons to be permissible:

  1. Institutional facilities may not be used.
  2. Playing lessons are not permitted - instruction must be provided to the recipient and must be comparable to the instruction provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time (no camps or clinics).
  3. Compensation for the lesson must be paid by the lesson recipient or the recipient's family and not another individual or entity.
  4. The student-athlete may not use his or her name, picture, or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of fee-for-lesson sessions.
  5. A fee-for-lesson form must be submitted to the Athletics Compliance Office upon completion of each private lesson.
