'Cats Top FBS Institutions in Graduation Success Rate

According to latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Northwestern led all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions for the second-consecutive year with a 98% overall mark. Northwestern's 98% GSR matches the department's and Big Ten's all-time record in the 15 years GSR data has been released. The Wildcats paced all other Big Ten Conference institutions by four percentage points.

Northwestern football is one of five Division I football programs to earn a 100% GSR this year and is the first program from a Power Five Conference to ever record a perfect score. NU's GSR is nine percent higher than the next closest Big Ten program. Wildcats football has ranked first or second in the nation in GSR among FBS schools for nine consecutive years.

In fiscal 2019 Northwestern set an all-time university record for annual research funding, bringing in more than $798.3 million, a 13.6% increase over the previous year and a 67.3 percent rise over the past decade. Recent grants include $46 million from the National Institutes of Health to fund the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, which provides medical researchers with resources to help get innovations out of the lab and to patients and doctors. The university also received $25 million from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to fund the Center for Hierarchical Materials and Design, a hub for high-tech materials research.

Northwestern was founded in 1851 by nine prominent Chicagoans who wanted to create a university to serve the region formerly known as the Northwest Territories. Today it is a private research university with three campuses in Evanston, Illinois; Chicago, Illinois and Doha, Qatar. The university operates more than 140 research centers including the Buffett Institute for Global Studies, a multidisciplinary research center established in 2015 with a $100 million gift from Roberta Buffett Elliott, alumna and sister of billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffett, which constituted the largest single gift in the university's history.

Niche based its rankings on factors like acceptance rates, student and alumni reviews, professor ratings, graduate income, and campus life.

Located on the edge of Lake Michigan, the campus offers great spring and summer breezes but may also see a few feet of lake-effect snow in the winter! Students will be greeted by "The Arch" as they walk onto the main campus, introducing you to the late 1800's architecture. University Hall is the second building constructed on campus (1869) and the oldest building still standing. "More than two-thirds of adults living in Evanston had completed at least a bachelor's degree, among the highest educational attainment rates in the nation. Younger Evanston residents seem to be on track to get a good education as well. Secondary school students performed above average on math and language arts standardized tests in 2013. Additionally, Northwestern University, one of the nation's top universities, is based in Evanston. In addition to a well-educated populace, Evanston residents have plenty of entertainment options available to them. Cook County, which includes Chicago, had 49 museums and 192 libraries as of 2012. There were also nearly 9,000 restaurants and more than 900 bars -- more than any other county in the nation."
 

Evanston Named America's 30th Most Educated City

"According to a study done by NerdWallet, Evanston is the 30th most educated place in the United States. The study weighed factors based on the percentage of eligible residents who had varying levels of education; from a high school diploma up to a doctorate. Over 85 percent of Evanston residents have at least a high school diploma, with just under two-thirds having at least a bachelor's degree. The city's 8.17 percent rate of residents who have their doctorate is near the top of the list. As with many cities on the list, Evanston is home to a major university, Northwestern University. Northwestern is ranked as the 13th best college in the United States by U.S. News & World Report."
