HILTON HEAD, S.C. (April 19, 2026) – After winning the Valspar Championship in March, Northwestern golf alum Matt Fitzpatrick took victory at the RBC Heritage on Sunday for his second win of the PGA Tour season.
"It's incredible," Fitzpatrick said. "Words don't really do it justice. I remember being stuck behind those gates and watching the players practice putting, and now I'm one of those and a two-time winner."
Fitzpatrick came out firing with a 6-under-par 65 in his opening round on Thursday and followed it up with an 8-under 63 to card his career-low score on the PGA Tour and take a one-shot lead into the weekend.
With a 3-under 68 on Moving Day, Fitzpatrick took a three-shot lead into the final round and secured a pairing with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
Fitzpatrick got off to a hot start on Sunday by birdieing two of his first three holes, but would not make a birdie the rest of the way. A bogey on 18 set up a playoff with Scheffler, who made a weekend charge of his own with a 4-under 67.
Fitzpatrick previously won the RBC Heritage in 2023, hitting a 9-iron from 187 yards away to mere inches to defeat Jordan Spieth on the third playoff hole.
This time around, Fitzpatrick would only need one playoff hole to seal the deal.
After his drive left him just over 200 yards to the pin, Fitzpatrick hit a 4-iron to just over 13 feet to put the pressure on Scheffler.
"I knew after the one in regulation, I had basically hit it as well as I could, and then in the fairway it was the same story," Fitzpatrick said. "I knew I could just hit it. Fortunately, I hit a great shot."
Positioned further up the fairway, Scheffler missed the green and chipped out to eight feet, but Fitzpatrick converted on the birdie putt to secure the victory.
"On Sunday it's a shot here or there that makes a difference," Scheffler said after the playoff. "This was one of those weeks where anytime Fitzy needed something to happen, he made something happen. He definitely earned the win, and he just played great golf."
The win gives Fitzpatrick his second victory in three starts on the PGA Tour, and he now sets his sights on the Zurich Classic, the PGA's only team event, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Fitzpatrick will compete alongside his brother Alex, who recently earned his maiden victory on the DP World Tour at the Hero Indian Open in March.
