EVANSTON, Ill. — Riding a nine-match winning streak, No. 54-ranked Northwestern men's tennis heads to South Bend, Ind., to face No. 24 Notre Dame on Friday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Wildcats (9-2) will then return to Evanston to host Denver on Sunday, Feb. 22, at noon CT inside Combe Tennis Center.
The Cats' nine-match win streak is the program's longest since they won nine straight to open the 2017 dual season. Two victories this weekend would extend the team's winning streak to 11, its longest since Jan. 29-March 12, 2016. Northwestern's 9-2 start is its best opening to a dual season since 2022, and six of the Wildcats' nine wins have been sweeps.
This past weekend, Northwestern swept Marquette, 7-0, and Illinois State, 4-0, at home. Playing at the No. 3 doubles slot, senior Chad Miller and sophomore Vincent Yang went 2-0 over the weekend with 6-1 and 6-0 victories. Miller also won both of his singles matches, doing so in dominant fashion with 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-1 triumphs. Junior Cyrus Mahjoob clinched both duals, as he tabbed a 6-2, 6-2 win against Marquette before defeating his Illinois State opponent 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles slot.
The Wildcats have won all nine doubles points during their winning streak, led by the team's two ranked doubles teams. Mahjoob and junior Ethan Schiffman come in as the No. 70 pairing in the country, tallying a 5-0 record together. They have played primarily at the No. 2 doubles position. Junior Greyson Casey and sophomore Carter Pate check in a few spots lower as the nation's No. 73 team. They have posted an unblemished 7-0 record together, with all of their matches at the No. 1 doubles slot.
Pate, who has competed at the No. 1 slot in both singles and doubles in the majority of his matches, leads the team with eight victories in both singles (8-2) and doubles (8-1). The sophomore's 16 total wins lead the team.
Behind Pate, Schiffman has tallied 14 wins with a 7-1 singles record, playing four of his last six matches at the No. 4 slot. He has a 7-0 doubles record on the year.
Miller has won each of his last five completed singles matches, primarily at the No. 5 position, in straight sets. He has triumphed in 60-of-73 (82.2%) of his games over his five-match winning streak.
Friday night's matchup will be the Wildcats' 21st meeting with the Fighting Irish (8-1, 1-0 ACC) since 2000. Northwestern has dropped its matches against Notre Dame in each of the past two seasons, but won the three matches prior. The Fighting Irish are coming off a weekend in which they defeated No. 25 Illinois, 4-1. Led by Sebastian Dominko, the ITA's No. 16 singles player nationally, the senior is 4-0 in the dual season. Perry Gregg, who is 5-1 in the dual season, is ranked No. 72 in the country.
Northwestern will seek its first top 25 victory since Feb. 4, 2024, when it defeated No. 8 Duke, 4-3, at home. The Wildcats have not defeated a top 25 team on the road since Feb. 5, 2023, when they beat No. 25 Duke, 4-3, in Durham, N.C.
On Sunday, Northwestern will match up with the Pioneers (4-2) for the fourth time in program history, with the last meeting coming at Denver in 2013, a 5-1 Wildcat victory. Denver is set to come to Evanston for the first time since 2012. Northwestern leads the all-time series against the Pioneers, 2-1. Denver started this season with a 4-0 record but dropped matches to Wichita State and Boise State this past weekend to fall to 4-2.
The Wildcats play their final match before Big Ten play begins when they welcome UIC to Combe Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 28. First serve is set for noon CT.
