EAST LANSING, Mich. - Seven Wildcats reached the podium in the first event of their 2026-27 season on Saturday, securing top-six finishes at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich. Massey Odiotti (133 lbs) and Eddie Enright (174 lbs) headlined with third-place finishes in the Open Division, while Liam Davis (125 lbs), Will Detar (133 lbs) and Peter Snyder (184 lbs) secured fifth- or sixth-place finishes in the Freshman/Sophomore Division in their collegiate debuts.
Odiotti, who is coming off a gold-medal finish at the U23 Pan American Championships over the summer, opened his tournament with back-to-back pins in the championship bracket. After dropping a match, the redshirt junior picked up another huge bonus point win in wrestlebacks, securing a technical fall over No. 8 Markel Baker (NIU) to lock in his spot on the podium. His third-place finish marks his second straight Michigan State Open podium after he finished third in the Open Division last fall as well.
Enright also made it back-to-back podiums at the event with his third-place finish. He surrendered just one takedown throughout the day, outscoring his opponents 34-9 across five bouts. The run included a pair of victories by major decision: a 9-0 win over Shane McFillin (Bucknell) and an 8-0 defeat of Connor O’Neill (Michigan State).
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, a pair of Wildcats secured fifth-place finishes. In his first weekend of collegiate action, Davis opened with back-to-back victories by decision to see himself to the semifinal at 125 lbs and eventually lock in a fifth-place finish. Alex Smith, last year’s Freshman/Sophomore Champion at 197 lbs, highlighted his day with a 15-0 technical fall over Brady Jess (Michigan State) in just 2:45. He defeated Cole Will (VMI) by 7-4 decision to take the fifth-place match.
Snyder won two straight bouts at 184 lbs to begin his day before an injury shortened his campaign, but he still left with a sixth-place finish. Also finishing sixth was Will Detar (133 lbs), who ran off three straight bonus-point victories in wrestlebacks. After back-to-back technical falls, the first-year pinned Preston LeFevre (Grand Valley) midway through the second period. Like Snyder, however, his tournament was cut short by an injury.
Rounding out the podium finishers for Northwestern was Gunnar Myers at 165 lbs. After dropping to the back side of the bracket, Myers put together a four-bout win streak to secure his spot on the podium. Most notable was a victory in sudden victory over InterMat's No. 13 wrestler, Noah Mulvaney (Bucknell).
While he didn’t reach the podium, Sam Cartella blanked three opponents at 149 lbs, grinding out a 1-0 victory by decision over No. 33 Cade Wirnsberger (Bucknell) between a pair of 15-0 technical falls.
