‘Cats Head North, Battle Marquette In Saturday Matinee

EVANSTON, Ill. (September 4, 2026) – Northwestern heads back out on the road on Saturday, making the trek north up Interstate 94 to take on Marquette. Kickoff from Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. is slated for 1 p.m. CT.

Northwestern picked up its first road victory of 2026 in come-from-behind fashion last Friday, rallying for a 2-1 win over Evansville at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Ind.  Following a Purple Aces’ penalty kick near the midway point of the first half, Tyler Glassberg put the Wildcats back on level terms with a goal in the 41^st minute of play.  Evrit Fisher put Northwestern in front with only eight minutes to play in the second half, chipping over Evansville goalkeeper Hugo Amo to give the ‘Cats a lead they would not relinquish.

In Monday’s home clash with Xavier, Peter Riesz and Bryant Mayer both found the back of the net during the second half as Northwestern valiantly battled to erase a three-goal deficit, ultimately falling by a final count of 3-2 at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

Marquette enters Saturday’s matinee with an identical record to that of Northwestern, sitting at 2-1-1 overall following a 3-1 defeat on the road at No. 23 Wisconsin on Monday evening. Joey Buchanan accounted for the Golden Eagles’ lone goal in the matchup, scoring just past the half-hour mark.

Picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Conference’s Midwest Division after a 7-7-2 (1-7-0 BIG EAST) finish in 2025, Marquette is led in the final third by Tomiwa Adewumi, who has netted a team-high four goals this season. Adewumi’s four tallies currently rank second in the BIG EAST and eighth overall nationally.

The pairing of Buchanan and Mads Konrad Horgøien provides added offensive firepower, having each notched a pair of goals, while Mateo Stoka’s four assists through the season’s opening four games have him sitting atop the league leaderboard in the category and third overall in Division I.

After starting in eight contests as a sophomore in 2025, Cameron Simpson has been given the early nod in goal this season by third-year head coach David Korn. Simpson, who totaled a career-best seven saves in Monday’s clash with the Badgers, sports a 1.75 goals against average and a 0.682 save percentage.

Series Stuff
Saturday’s tilt in the shadows of downtown Milwaukee will serve as the 21st all-time meeting between Northwestern and Marquette in men’s soccer. The ‘Cats trimmed the Golden Eagles’ lead in the series to 13-6-1 (.675) when the two teams last met on September 9, 2024, as a Nigel Prince goal in the 84th minute provided the difference in a 1-0 victory at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

Seeking its first road win over its neighbor to the north in program history, Northwestern is set to visit Marquette for the first time since dropping a 4-1 decision at Valley Fields on September 5, 2016.
