EVANSTON, Ill. (September 25, 2026) – Peter Riesz’s 15th-minute goal and a heroic defensive effort proved to be enough to see Northwestern (5-3-1, 2-1 B1G) past Michigan (2-3-2, 0-2-1 B1G) by a final score of 1-0 this evening at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
How It Happened
Chances came at a premium throughout on a cool, late summer evening along the shores of Lake Michigan. Riesz made the most of Northwestern’s first look on goal just in front of the quarter-hour mark. After chasing down a feed from Andrew Millar, Riesz chipped over an onrushing Alen Bean, the Michigan goalkeeper, and into the back of the net to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 advantage.
Dominic Pereira protected the lead in the 26th minute, making his first stop of the night on Joao Paulo Ramos’ free kick. Northwestern was reduced to 10 men shortly after, as Andrew Johnson picked up his second yellow card of the evening, forcing the ‘Cats to play a man down for the final hour.
Entering the second half still staked to a one-goal advantage, the Wildcat defensive unit turned in an outstanding all-around effort. Despite being outshot by a 5-1 margin across the final 45 minutes, Northwestern limited the visitors to just one shot on target en route to securing its second Big Ten Conference victory of the season.
