EVANSTON, Ill. – Alex Fallon’s 35th-minute goal lifted Northwestern to a 1-0 victory over Denver on Sunday night at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

After dominating possession and creating multiple chances, including a shot off the post, Northwestern (1-2) broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Junior forward Kennedy Roesch and first-year midfielder Elle Phillips linked up to find junior forward Alex Fallon, who evaded a defender and fired a shot past the Denver (0-3) goalkeeper to open the scoring. Fallon’s goal marks her first of the season and the fourth of her career, while Phillips notched her first career assist.

The Wildcats’ advantage continued in the waning minutes of the first half, ending with a 10-2 advantage in shots.Â
Northwestern kept pushing for a second goal in the second half, but was unable to add on, outshooting the Pioneers, 4-2 in the final 45 minutes. NU made inroads throughout the second half, but had multiple promising chances thwarted by the offside flag.Â
Fallon’s goal is the first game-winning goal of her career. The ‘Cats improve to 2-0-2 when the Atlanta, Ga., native scores a goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nyamma Nelson made one save, recording her first clean sheet of the season and her 11th career shutout.
The Wildcats close out the first homestand of the season when they host Illinois State at 6:30 p.m. CT on Thursday at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
