EVANSTON, Ill. - Coming off of a 10-2 start in non-conference play, Northwestern volleyball will open its Big Ten season at home this Wednesday evening when the 'Cats host Indiana on Big Ten Network. The match, which is set to begin at 8 p.m. CT, will be the first of four straight home matches to open the 'Cats' conference schedule.
Last time out, the 'Cats defeated Campbell in a sweep at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday. Rylen Reid led the offense with 14 kills - her ninth straight double-digit performance - while Ayah Elnady fell just shy of a double-double with a season-high 13 digs and nine kills. Heading into conference play, Reid and Elnady lead the team with 135 and 105 kills respectively on the season. They combined to lead the Wildcat offense in six of 12 matchups during non-conference action.
The 'Cats have continued to impress from the service line this year, and enter Big Ten play ranked first in the conference in total aces, with 92 across 12 matches. Reid has paced the team in that category as well, with 18, while Drew Wright and Elnady have both contributed with 17 apiece. Overall, 11 Wildcats recorded at least one service ace during non-conference action, and six have recorded five or more already this season.
They'll look to take on a 9-1 Indiana team that also impressed in non-conference play. The Hoosiers' only loss came on September 19 on the road against Western Kentucky, who was receiving votes. Indiana has been led offensively by Candela Alonso-Corcelles, who enters this Wednesday's match ranked 11th in the Big Ten in kills with 127 on the season. As a team, the Hoosiers have been the best in the conference in hitting percentage, attacking at .338 clip. On the defensive side, Indiana is ranked third in the Big Ten in blocks per set, averaging 2.94.
Wednesday's match will be the 82nd all-time meeting between these two programs, with Indiana holding the narrow 41-40 lead in the series. The Hoosiers came out on top of the most recent meeting - a 3-0 sweep last season in Bloomington - but the 'Cats won the last match in Evanston, a five-setter on October 26, 2023. Following the meeting at Welsh-Ryan Arena, the 'Cats will make the return trip to Bloomington later this year, with the second of two scheduled matchups between Northwestern and Indiana set to take place on October 26.
After finishing up against Indiana, the 'Cats will continue Big Ten action on Sunday afternoon, when they host Oregon. First serve against the Ducks is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and action will be streamed on B1G+.
