Svärd Finishes Top 20, Paces ‘Cats at B1Gs

BALTIMORE, Md. – Daniel Svärd was one of only three golfers to shoot under par in the final round of this year's Big Ten Championships, held in often blustery conditions in Baltimore. He secured his sixth Top 25 finish of the year by finishing T-19th.
The 'Cats closed play with a 54-hole team score of 868 (284-288-296) to place 12th in the team race.
No. 12 UCLA (+2; 278-282-282=842) came from behind on the final day to win its first Big Ten Conference title, ensuring a sweep as Bruin Omar Morales had a strong showing throughout the event, capturing medalist honors. The Bruins also earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. They bested No. 13 Illinois (+3; 270-282-291=843), who was attempting to win the team title for the 14th time in the past 16 years. Morales, currently ranked no. 66, carded a 7-under 203 (66-67-70) to finish atop the individual leaderboard by three strokes over Oregon's Greyson Leach (-4; 68-68-70=206). Michigan State (+14; 281-283-290=854) rounded out the Top 3.
The Wildcats were led by Svärd who shot a 4-over 214 (73-72-69) at the event, which was held at the par-70, 7,181-yard Baltimore Country Club. Niall Shiels-Donegan shot a 1-under 69 in the first round, his ninth round in the 60s this season. The team finished T-5th in birdies made (36).
Last year, behind four Top 10 finishers, the team took home the title in wire-to-wire fashion at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Then-sophomore Svärd won the individual championship for the second straight year, posting a one-over-par performance. He became the first player in Big Ten history to win the Big Ten Individual Championship in each of his first two seasons.
