‘Cats Fall to Huskies in Series Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fell 19-4 (7 innings) to Washington on Friday afternoon in the series opener of this weekend's three-game series at Miller Park.

Washington (23-20, 12-7 Big Ten) jumped out to an early lead with four runs, two unearned, in the first inning. The Huskies added one in the second and two in the fourth to go ahead 7-0.

SS Ryan Kucherak hit his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center. Kucherak's homer marked his ninth of conference play, third-most in the Big Ten. The Huskies put up eight runs on eight hits and three walks in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 15-1. 

The Wildcats (18-21, 8-11 Big Ten) scored three runs on a pair of homers in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, 2B Jacob Hand homered for the second-straight game, a two-run jack to right. Two batters later, 3B Owen McElfatrick hit his seventh home run of the year, a solo homer to right-center.

Washington added one run in the sixth and three in the seventh to stretch its lead to 19-4.

Saturday and Sunday's games are set for 1 p.m. CT on B1G+.
