EAST LANSING, Mich. - Northwestern Women's Tennis (10-8, 3-3 B1G) will travel east this weekend to take on No. 73 Michigan State and No. 3 Michigan on the road. The 'Cats head to East Lansing to face the Spartans at 4 p.m. CT on Friday, then trek to Ann Arbor to play the Wolverines at 1:30 p.m. CT on Sunday.
After splitting last weekend's slate against No. 20 Washington and Oregon, the 'Cats enter this weekend ranked No. 44 in the ITA National Women's Team Rankings.
Despite the loss to the Huskies, Erica Jessel recorded the first ranked singles win of her career last Saturday, upsetting the ITA's No. 84 player in the nation, Reece Carter. Kiley Rabjohns and Britany Lau picked up a victory against Oregon and now enter the weekend having won four of their last five doubles matches, outscoring their opponents 27 games to 15 during that span.
For Michigan State (10-7, 2-4 B1G), the 'Cats will serve as the eighth consecutive ranked opponent they'll face during dual season. The Spartans have struggled during that stretch, having lost three straight matches and five of their last seven heading into the weekend. Historically, Northwestern has dominated the conference rivalry, winning all but two of their 47 total matches against Michigan State. The run included a 4-1 victory in their last meeting with the Spartans in 2023.
Third-ranked Michigan (13-3, 6-0 B1G) enters the weekend hot on a seven-match winning streak. The Wolverines are 8-3 against ranked opponents this year, their losses coming at the hands of No. 12 Oklahoma, No 19. NC State and No. 14 Duke. Northwestern also leads this all-time series, 52-26, although their last match ended in a sweep for Michigan.
The ITA's singles rankings feature five Michigan competitors, while the doubles rankings feature three. The singles rankings include Julia Fliegner at No. 3, Piper Charney at No. 22, Lily Jones at No. 34, Emily Sartz-Lunde at No. 86 and Reese Miller at No. 123. In the doubles rankings, Jessica Bernales is featured twice, forming the No. 34 ranked duo with Charney and the No. 47 duo with Jones. Miller and Fliegner round out the bunch at No. 70.
Following this weekend's trip, Northwestern will return to Evanston to host Ohio State and Penn State next weekend. The home stand will begin on Friday, April 4, with first serve against the Buckeyes scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT.
