KANSAS CITY – Northwestern junior forward Nick Martinelli (first team) and senior guard Brooks Barnhizer (second team) have been selected as NABC All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, as announced on Tuesday morning.
Martinelli completed the season as the Big Ten's leading scorer averaging 20.5 points per game, the most in a year by a Wildcat since Evan Eschmeyer posted 21.7 points per game in 1997-98. He broke the school's single-season scoring record, which was previously held by John Shurna (661, 2011-12), by logging 676 points. In addition, the junior averaged 6.2 rebounds per game, becoming the first Northwestern player to register at least 20 points and 5 rebounds per game since Shurna in 2011-12.
The Glenview, Ill. product scored 15+ points in 18 straight games to close the campaign, the longest active streak by a high-major player in the country. Martinelli scored 10+ points in 26 straight games, the longest streak by a Wildcat since at least 2000. He played a league-high 37.7 minutes per game this season and is the first high-major player to post at least 20+ points, 5+ rebounds and 37.5+ minutes per game since Kemba Walker at UConn in 2010-11.
Barnhizer posted nine double-doubles in 17 games played this season (missed the remainder of the year with a foot injury), and averaged 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. At the time of his final game, he ranked eighth in the conference in scoring, fourth in rebounding, 10th in assists, second in steals and fourth in blocks. He logged seven straight double-doubles, which is believed to be the most by a Wildcat in program history. The Lafayette, Ind. native is the first Big Ten player to post career marks of 1,000+ points, 500+ rebounds and 200+ assists in 96 or fewer career games since Michael Redd (Ohio State, 1997-2000).
The NABC introduced a new model for its Division I district alignment this season, with schools arranged by state rather than by conference. The modernized NABC Division I district alignment features 10 geographic regions that each encompass multiple states. Every Division I school in each given state belongs to that state's corresponding district.
