Martinelli and Barnhizer Earn All-Big Ten Honors

3/11/2025 11:35:00 AM | Men's Basketball

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Northwestern junior forward Nick Martinelli and senior guard Brooks Barnhizer both earned postseason Big Ten Conference honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Martinelli, the Big Ten's leading scorer averaging 20.2 points per game, was named to the second team (coaches, media), while Barnhizer was an honorable mention selection (media).

Martinelli, who is also averaging 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 46.7% from the field, is the first Northwestern player to register at least 20 points and 5 rebounds per game in a season since John Shurna in 2011-12. He ranks second nationally in scoring among high-major forwards, trailing only Eric Dixon of Villanova, who leads the nation in points per game.

The Glenview, Ill. product has scored 15+ points in 16 straight games, the longest active streak by a high-major player in the country. Martinelli has scored 10+ points in 24 straight games, the longest streak by a Wildcat since at least 2000. The junior is playing a league-high 37.5 minutes per game this season and is the first high-major player to post at least 20+ points, 5+ rebounds and 37.5+ minutes per game since Kemba Walker at UConn in 2010-11.

Martinelli has scored 626 points this season, which ranks third-most in a single-season in school history, and his 232 field goals are a single-season record.

Barnhizer earned postseason recognition for the second straight season after being named to the third team All-Big Ten in 2023-24. He posted nine double-doubles in 17 games played this season (missed the remainder of the year with a foot injury), averaging 17.1 points, 8,8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. At the time of his final game, he ranked eighth in the conference in scoring, fourth in rebounding, 10th in assists, second in steals and fourth in blocks. He logged seven straight double-doubles, which is believed to be the most by a Wildcat in program history.

The Lafayette, Ind. native is the first Big Ten player to post career marks of 1,000+ points, 500+ rebounds and 200+ assists in 96 or fewer career games since Michael Redd (Ohio State, 1997-2000).

Barnhizer was also named Northwestern's Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Northwestern turns to postseason play and will face Minnesota in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 12 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The game can be seen on Peacock and heard on WGN Radio 720.
