2/13/2025 7:53:00 PM | Wrestling
EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling (3-6, 1-5 B1G) is set to open its final weekend of dual season at home, taking on the Wisconsin Badgers (5-10, 1-6 B1G) on Senior Night this Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Following the home finale, the 'Cats will wrap up the regular season on the road on Sunday, taking on the No. 3 Iowa Hawkeyes (11-1, 5-1 B1G) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Friday's match is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT, while Sunday's match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT first whistle.
LAST TIME OUT
Northwestern notched its first Big Ten dual victory of the season last weekend against Michigan State at home. Seven wrestlers contributed to the team win, headlined by No. 14 Evan Bates' pin of then-No. 25 Remy Cotton at 197 lbs. No. 25 Sam Cartella (149 lbs) earned his fifth victory of Big Ten season with a 9-6 decision over Clayton Jones, and Jon Halvorsen earned a victory in a second overtime tiebreaker at 184 lbs. Also in the win column were Dedrick Navarro (125 lbs), Massey Odiotti (133 lbs), Chris Cannon (141 lbs) and No. 9 Trevor Chumbley (157 lbs).
BATTLING THE BADGERS
Wisconsin and Northwestern last met in Madison in February of last season. Chumbley and Bates both won their bouts - two of three wrestlers to do so for the 'Cats - but the Badgers pulled off a 30-12 victory. Even with the setback, Northwestern has won four of their last six against the Badgers.
Like the 'Cats, the Badgers are coming off a home win over Michigan State. Wisconsin beat the Spartans 25-12 with victories in seven of ten weight classes as the Badgers worked to their first conference win of the season. Entering action this weekend, Wisconsin has two wrestlers ranked in InterMat's Top-33: No. 17 Nicolar Rivera at 125 lbs, and No. 14 Zan Fugitt at 133 lbs.
UP AGAINST IOWA
With nine of ten starters ranked in InterMat's Top-15, the Hawkeyes stuck at No. 3 as a team in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week. After downing No. 7 Nebraska last Friday in Iowa City, 19-16, Iowa has taken down seven Top-25 teams this season. Their sole defeat came at the hands of No. 1 Penn State at the end of January. Before hosting the 'Cats, the Hawkeyes will visit Minneapolis on Friday to battle the No. 6 Gophers.
Iowa has owned the all-time series against Northwestern, winning 76 of 85 meetings, and will enter action on Sunday with an active 15-match win streak over the 'Cats.
