'Cats Open ITA Championship Action Against No. 1 Georgia
2/6/2025 7:09:00 PM | Women's Tennis
EVANSTON, Ill. - Eighth-seeded Northwestern women's tennis (4-1) will open its 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday evening with a first-round match-up against national No. 1 and top-seeded Georgia (3-1) at Combe Tennis Center. The 'Cats will take on the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. CT, or 15 minutes after the conclusion of the previous match.
The hosting Wildcats enter the tournament fresh off a thrilling win over Georgia Tech last weekend in Evanston. Graduate student Britany Lau clinched the team victory with her third individual win this season at No. 3 singles. Lau remains undefeated in both singles and doubles play this dual season, holding a 6-0 record overall. She and partner Mika Dagan Fruchtman were tabbed the No. 64 duo nationally in Wednesday's ITA doubles rankings.
Dagan Fruchtman is also one of two first years who have topped head coach Claire Pollard's singles lineup in each of the first five matches this dual season. With Dagan Fruchtman nabbing the No. 1 spot, Erica Jessel has slotted in at No. 2 for the 'Cats. After sitting out last dual season, sophomore Autumn Rabjohns has also made an impact in singles play for Northwestern this winter, contributing three singles wins across the first two weeks of action.
Northwestern will be faced with a tough Georgia squad right out of the gate. The Bulldogs went 3-0 in their first two weekends of play, not dropping a single team point in sweeps of Georgia Tech, Charlotte and Princeton. After clinching their spot in the ITA Indoor Championships, Georgia fell for the first time in dual action last weekend to No. 8 North Carolina, who will also compete in this weekend's tournament.
Though they've only competed as a duo once during dual season, Georgia's pairing of Aysegul Mert and Guillermina Grant sit at No. 16 in the most recent ITA doubles rankings. Additionally, the Bulldogs placed four in the singles rankings, headlined by the nation's No. 1 overall singles player in Dasha Vidmanova. Also in the Top-100 for Georgia are Anastasiia Lopata (No. 37), Mert (No. 75) and Grant (No. 90).
The winner of Friday's match-up between Northwestern and Georgia will advance on to play the winner of the earlier match between No. 4 Stanford and No. 10 Auburn. That quarterfinal match will take place at 3:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, February 8.
The non-advancing team out of Northwestern's match with Georgia will continue play in a consolation match against the loser of Stanford's match with Auburn. The consolation match will take place at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday,
