Lau Clinches 4-2 Wildcat Victory Over Georgia Tech

2/2/2025 8:41:00 PM | Women's Tennis

EVANSTON, Ill. - Graduate student Britany Lau provided the difference on Sunday afternoon in Evanston as Northwestern women's tennis (4-1) closed out a dramatic 4-2 victory over Georgia Tech (4-3) at Combe Tennis Center. The win preserved Northwestern's unblemished home record in dual season.

The Wildcats got the match started on the right foot by securing the doubles point. The ITA's No. 42 ranked doubles duo of Britany Lau and Mika Dagan Fruchtman won a 6-3 match at the No. 1 position, sealing the deal after Erica Jessel and Sydney Pratt won their No. 2 doubles match, 6-4.

With the 'Cats up one, the teams battled through a tightly contested singles round. The Yellow Jackets were the first to strike; Kate Sharabura won in straight sets at No. 4 singles, then Scarlett Nicholson edged out Jessel at No. 2 with a second-set tiebreak victory. Sydney Pratt knotted things back up with the first singles win of the day for Northwestern, however. Her 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win at the No. 5 position brought the score to two apiece with three left to play.

The remaining singles matches all stretched to three sets apiece. Lau and Autumn Rabjohns dropped second sets to even their matches, while Dagan Fruchtman ground out a 13-11 tiebreak victory in the second to force her own third set. From there, Rabjohns was the first to the finish line, locking up a win at No. 6 singles with a 6-2 win in the final frame.

Lau, who fell just short in a 6-8 tiebreak in the second set, battled back in the third for the deciding point of the afternoon. Her 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win served up match point for Northwestern. After playing almost exclusively at No. 5 and No. 6 singles last season, Lau is now 3-0 at No. 3 singles in 2025 dual action.

Next up for the 'Cats is the ITA Indoor Team Championships, where they'll play host to the nation's top women's tennis teams as they fight for the team title. Draws will be announced early next week ahead of Friday's opening matches. Attending teams have been announced and tickets are on sale now for the winter's premier college tennis event.
