EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 47 Northwestern Women's Tennis (6-4) wraps up its non-conference dual season this weekend, facing a pair of ranked opponents. The 'Cats take on No. 31 Vanderbilt (6-1) on Friday at 4 p.m. CT, then travel to No. 30 Kansas (6-3) for a Sunday matchup starting at noon CT.
The Wildcats look to extend their winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader last Sunday against UIC and Milwaukee. Kiley Rabjohns and Neena Feldman both went 4-0 on the weekend with a pair of singles wins each as well as two victories as a pair at No. 2 doubles. After her 3-0 weekend at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles, Erica Jessel was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
No. 31 Vanderbilt comes into Evanston on a dominant stretch of dual play, sweeping four of its past five opponents. The Commodores hold an 11-3 advantage in the all-time record against the 'Cats. Last season, Northwestern fell to Vanderbilt in a close 4-3 loss on the road, the decisive set being a closely contested No. 3 singles match between Christina Hand and then-sophomore Bridget Stammel, who currently ranks 41st in the ITA singles rankings.
Stammel, the reigning ITA Ohio Valley Regional Champion in singles, is currently 14-5 individually, with three of those wins coming against ranked opponents. Also headlining for the Commodores are No. 46 Celia-Belle Mohr and No. 94 Valeria Ray. Mohr is also ranked in doubles action alongside her partner, Sophia Webster, sitting at No. 12 nationally after playing to an 11-5 record in tournament and dual action this year.
The 'Cats will then visit the Jayhawks on Sunday afternoon. Despite losses in three of their last four, Kansas earned the No. 30 spot in the most recent ITA team rankings, and junior Gracie Mulville joined the singles rankings at No. 102. The Sunday match will be the ninth meeting of the two programs, and will be nearly one year to the day of their last match: a 4-1 Northwestern upset over the then-No. 46 ranked Jayhawks. Historically, the 'Cats have won four of their nine matches against Kansas.
Following this weekend's matches, Northwestern will take a week off before kicking off Big Ten action on the road on March 7. The 'Cats will travel to Wisconsin for a 5 p.m. CT meeting on Friday, then visit Minnesota on Sunday, March 9, for a noon CT matchup.
