EVANSTON, Ill. - Following a 3-0 weekend across two matches, first-year Erica Jessel has been named Big Ten Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Jessel contributed in both of the 'Cats' wins during their Sunday doubleheader, competing at the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles action.
Alongside partner Sydney Pratt, Jessel began her weekend with a dominant 6-1 victory against UIC. The win improved the pair to 7-2 in doubles play this dual season. Though the duo's second match of the day went unfinished against Milwaukee, Jessel and Pratt were leading their opponents 5-2 before the abandonment.
In singles action, Jessel continued an impressive first-year campaign. Playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in her collegiate career, she picked up wins against both weekend opponents. First, her 6-4, 6-1 win against UIC's Maya Ushio contributed to the 'Cats' 5-2 win in that match. In the evening contest, Jessel repeated her performance with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nadiia Konieva as part of a 7-0 Wildcat sweep.
Jessel is the first-ever Wildcat to earn Freshman of the Week honors after the conference originated the award this January.
Wildcat women's tennis returns to action this Friday afternoon, hosting Vanderbilt at 4 p.m. CT at Combe Tennis Center.
