Northwestern Resumes Non-Conference Play Sunday At Utah

‘Cats knocked off Utes last season at Welsh-Ryan Arena, 71-69

EVANSTON, Ill. (December 13, 2025) – Following back-to-back contests at home, Northwestern (6-3, 0-1 B1G) begins a stretch that sees it play four of its next five games away from Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday afternoon when it resumes non-conference action against Utah. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. CT from inside the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

LAST TIME OUT
Grace Sullivan posted the top offensive performance by a Wildcat since 2010 as Northwestern dropped a 79-70 decision to No. 23 Ohio State in its Big Ten Conference opener last Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Sullivan shattered her week-old career high, pouring in 37 points on 17-of-28 shooting, in addition to adding eight rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a block. The senior's 37 points tied for the fifth most in a single game in program history, a mark first established by Amy Jaeschke against Central Michigan on December 11, 2010.

Caroline Lau notched her third game of double-digit assists, handing out a season-high 14 helpers as she finished only two assists shy of the single game program record in the category.

The pairing of Casey Harter and Xamiya Walton joined Sullivan in double figures in scoring. Harter drilled three triples en route to finishing with 11 points, while Walton hit on two treys of her own as part of a 10-point effort.

SCOUTING UTAH
Utah (7-3) rolls into Sunday's matchup with Northwestern in the midst of a four-game tear, most recently dispatching Boise State, 91-58, last Wednesday at the Huntsman Center. The Utes were picked eighth in the Big 12 Conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll after finishing 22-9 (13-5 Big 12) last season and making a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Piloted by second-year head coach Gavin Petersen, Utah has proven to be a tough out at home, going 15-3 (.833) inside the Huntsman Center since Petersen's appointment as head coach on November 19, 2024.

In the season's opening month, Utah has established itself as one of the nation's premier three-point shooting teams, knocking down 10.0 triples per game, a mark that ranks ninth in Division I.

Lani White leads the attack for the Utes on the offensive end of the floor, averaging a team-best 12.4 points. The Virginia Tech transfer is coming off a career-high tying 23-point outburst in Utah's aforementioned win over Boise State.

SERIES STUFF
Northwestern holds a slim 2-1 edge in three previous clashes with Utah. When the two teams met last season at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Caileigh Walsh converted in the closing seconds as the 'Cats roared back from a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat the Utes, 71-69. Melannie Daley paced Northwestern in the win with a game-high 23 points.

Northwestern will be making just its second visit to The Beehive State on Sunday. In their only previous road matchup with Utah, the Wildcats dropped an 80-69 decision at the Huntsman Center on December 20, 2006.
