EVANSTON, Ill. - Following a fifth-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last weekend, Eddie Enright has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Thursday. Enright, a redshirt first-year, is Northwestern's first ever Freshman of the Week following the award's creation last season.
Wrestling at 174 lbs, Enright opened his tournament with a dominant 11-1 major decision over Leo Tukhlynovych (ASU) in the round of 32. After falling narrowly to No. 13 Beau Mantanona (Michigan) in the round of 16, Enright ran off three straight victories in wrestlebacks to secure his podium position. Most impressively, he defeated then-No. 30 Riley Davis (Wyoming) by 19-4 technical fall in the blood round.
Enright put an exclamation mark on his tournament on Saturday, defeating No. 24 Moses Espinoza-Owens (SDSU) by 4-2 decision for his second ranked victory of the tournament. All of that added up to a fifth-place finish for the redshirt first-year, the highest placement by any Northwestern wrestler at the event this year.
The stand-out performance at CKLV added on to a strong start to Enright's season overall. After a month of action, the 174-pounder is 9-3 with six bonus-point victories to his name. Following the weekend, he debuted in both the FloWrestling and InterMat rankings for his weight class, ranking No. 28 and No. 27, respectively.
Enright is the first Northwestern wrestler to earn a Big Ten weekly award since Yahya Thomas in January of 2023.
He and the 'Cats will be back in action next weekend, when they are set to open the home portion of their season against Lock Haven. First whistle from Welsh-Ryan Arena is set for 6 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 19.
