'Cats Claim Two Championships, Six Top-Three Finishes at Michigan State Open
11/8/2025 7:17:00 PM | Wrestling
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Eddie Enright and Alex Smith both finished first in their weight classes on Saturday at the Michigan State Open, becoming two of six Wildcats to claim top-three finishes at the first event of the season. Enright, Smith, Giosue Hickman and Gunnar Myers were among the top finishers in the freshman/sophomore division, while Massey Odiotti and Sam Cartella both wrestled to third place in the open division.
In his first taste of collegiate action, first-year Smith made a strong impression at 197 lbs. He opened his day with an 18-3 win by technical fall over Findlay's Ronnie Thomas, then followed it up with an even more emphatic result in the quarterfinals, pinning Nathan Elstner (NIU) midway through the second period. A 6-0 decision over Derek Badgley (GVSU) delivered Smith to the championship bout, where he finished off his opponent, Aidan Ysaguirre (ASU), by 7-2 decision.
Enright racked up a trio of bonus-point victories on his own run to the title at 174 lbs, defeating all three of his opponents by major decision. He outscored his foes 47-10 on the day, capped off by an 11-0 shutout against Purdue's Aidan Costello in the championship match.
Also in the freshman/sophomore division, a pair of Wildcats impressed in wrestlebacks to claim third-place finishes. After falling narrowly in a 2-0 decision to open his day, Hickman won four straight bouts to secure his third-place finish at 141 lbs. Wrestling at 157, Myers opened his day with a 15-3 major decision over Joe Clark (EDIN) before falling in the second round to Michigan's Justin Gates. In the back half of the bracket, he picked up two more bonus-point victories to reach the third-place bout, where he won a 9-6 decision over Stiles Stits (KENT).
At 149 lbs in the open division, Cartella surrendered just four points all day. He picked up a pin of Tommy Curran (NIU) in the first round, then took his only loss of the tournament to Jimmy Nurgent (CMU) in sudden victory, 4-1. From there, a technical fall and a major decision - both of which saw Cartella keep his opponent off the scoreboard - brought him to a podium finish.
Odiotti wrestled to a series of scrappy victories along the way to his third-place finish at 133 lbs. He ran off three straight wins to open his day, beginning with a dominant 18-2 technical fall over Logan Klinge (GVSU). After a setback to a ranked opponent in the quarterfinals, Odiotti won by 11-7 decision over Nick Molchak (KENT) to put himself in the third-place match, where he put an exclamation point on his day with a first-period pin of Amonn Ohl (EDIN).
Matthew Kubas (184 lbs) and Jacob Bostelman (165 lbs) both finished fifth in their weight classes, rounding out the group of eight total podium finishers for Northwestern.
