CORALVILLE, Iowa - Northwestern volleyball will split a pair of matches this weekend, hitting the road on Thursday before returning home to close the weekend in Evanston on Sunday. The 'Cats will face the Iowa Hawkeyes for the second time this season on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT, then host the Washington Huskies in Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT. Both matches will be streamed on B1G+.
The Wildcats came up just short last weekend in Los Angeles, falling to UCLA in a five-set heart-breaker after dropping a 3-1 match to No. 17 USC. Buse Hazan led the offensive charge against the Bruins with a match-high 18 kills, becoming the fourth Northwestern player this season to record a match with 18 or more kills. Also impactful was Ayah Elnady, who recorded double-doubles in both matches, including a season-high 14 digs against USC on Thursday.
Lauren Carter came alive against UCLA, coming up with a team-high 34 assists along with seven digs and a service ace. She also notched five kills against the Bruins, matching her total from the rest of the season combined. On the defensive end, Drew Wright finished with 17 digs, tying her season high, first reached against New Mexico State in the Wildcats' season opener.
First up, the 'Cats will go head-to-head with Iowa (13-13, 4-10 Big Ten) on Thursday night. In their first matchup on October 31, Northwestern was able to secure a five-set victory at home. The win was highlighted by a career-high 27 kills from Rylen Reid. This time around, the Wildcats will face the Hawkeyes on the road. Iowa is coming off two losses against then-No. 9 Purdue and No. 18 Indiana, with its most recent win coming against Illinois on November 2. The 'Cats will have to get through the Hawkeye front line, as Hannah Whittingstall is currently tied for second in the Big Ten in total blocks this season with 117.
Northwestern will then face Washington (10-14, 5-9 Big Ten) for the first time this season on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Huskies' most notable win in conference play came on October 27, when they came out on top of then-No. 17 Penn State. Washington will lean on Katy Wessels, who leads the conference in total blocks (122) in addition to teammate Kierstyn Barton, who is currently ranked ninth in the Big Ten in total kills (320).
Following these matchups, the 'Cats will remain in the Midwest for two road matches against Ohio State and Purdue. Northwestern will battle the Buckeyes at 5 p.m. CT on November 21st on B1G+. They will then visit the Boilermakers at 5:30 p.m. CT on November 23 on BTN.
