WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Sophomore forward Kennedy Roesch tallied two goals over a three-minute span in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory over Purdue on Sunday evening at Folk Field in West Lafayette.
Caterina Regazzoni opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the 15th minute, striking on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, leaving the Purdue goalkeeper with no chance. Regazzoni's goal marks her career-high fifth of the season and the 14th of her career.
The Boilermakers evened the game at one in the 30th minute, equalizing on a corner kick. Junior midfielder Irene Campo won a header in the box to beat Wildcat first-year goalkeeper Nyamma Nelson and level the game at one apiece. Campo's goal is NU's first goal conceded in over two games.
Despite an 11-6 first half advantage in shots for Northwestern, both sides headed into halftime tied at one goal apiece.
NU opened up the second half with a flurry of chances and quickly capitalized in the 48th minute. After Megan Norkett's initial shot was saved off the line by a Boilermaker defender, Norkett found Roesch off the rebound, who slotted it home to put Northwestern back in front. Roesch's goal stood up as the game-winner, giving her three on the season and six in her career, fifth-most in program history.
Just three minutes later, lightning struck twice when Roesch found the back of the net again. First-year defender Audrey Alberts served a ball into the box and a wide-open Roesch struck it with her left foot to secure her first-career brace and give NU a 3-1 lead. Roesch is the first Wildcat to score two goals in the same game since Ella Hase did so on Oct. 15, 2023 against Penn State.
NU outshot the Boilermakers 20-11, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats outshot their opponent for the sixth-straight game, dating back to Sept. 28 against Penn State.
Northwestern's offense tallied three goals for the third time over its last five games, previously defeating Nebraska (Oct. 5) and Rutgers (Oct. 12) by identical 3-0 scorelines.
The Wildcats will close out the regular season against Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 26. Kickoff from Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium is set for 4 p.m. CT on B1G+.
Northwestern's (8-3-6, 4-2-4 Big Ten) victory marked its third win in a row and fourth in its last five games. The Wildcats close out the regular season road slate with a 4-2-4 record away from home, and currently sit in seventh place in the Big Ten with 16 points and one game remaining.HEADED HOME WITH THE W! ?? pic.twitter.com/oH2uqto1cb
