‘Cats Persist in 2-1 Victory at No. 10 Terrapins

10/19/2025 3:54:00 PM | Field Hockey

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In its second ranked Big Ten road test of the weekend, the No. 1 Northwestern Field Hockey team (13-1, 5-0 Big Ten) found its groove in the third quarter to come back and defeat No. 10 Maryland, 2-1. The Sunday matchup against the Terrapins (8-6, 4-3 Big Ten) felt a momentum shift after the break, as the Wildcats found their way on the board, and eventually in the lead for their 13th win.
Graduate student midfielder Maddie Zimmer posted the equalizer early in the third quarter with a penalty stroke, notching her fourth goal of the season. Nine minutes later, senior back Maja Zivojnovic put the ball away after a penalty corner attempt for the go-ahead goal. The senior has now scored in back-to-back games for the second time in her career (Sept. 22-24, 2024, Ohio State, Princeton).

The conference game saw its first shot within 20 seconds with a Maryland penalty corner. In the sixth minute, the Terrapins got another chance, this time putting the ball in the back of the cage to get on the board and take an early lead. UMD remained in control, firing off three more shots before the quarter ended.

The second period opened with a shot from junior forward Olivia Bent-Cole, the first of the day for NU, and only of the half. Redshirt first-year Juliana Boon collected her second save on another Maryland penalty corner, keeping it a one-goal game in College Park.

Three minutes into the third quarter, the 'Cats received a penalty shot. Zimmer fired the ball in, just over the Terp in the cage to tie the game. NU went on to receive three penalty corners, which were blocked and shot wide, until the fourth.

Junior forward Ashley Sessa inserted the ball, which was shot by junior back Ilse Tromp. Maryland goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko came up with the save, but could not clear the ball, leaving Zivojnovic to take a shot. Mastering the angle, the senior notched the go-ahead goal in the 42nd minute.
With momentum back on Northwestern's side, the 'Cats' defense maintained control in the final period, allowing only one shot and no penalty corners from the Terrapins. NU walked away with the 2-1 victory.

Tromp led the team in shots (three), while Zimmer and Zivojnovic both brought in two points. Only 10 shots were taken per team, leaving it to saves to make the difference in the end. Each facing five shots on goal, Boon tallied four saves to give the 'Cats the advantage on the board.
Remaining perfect in Big Ten play (5-0), Northwestern continues to establish its position at the top of conference standings. The result also marked 25-straight victories in Big Ten regular-season matchups, and six consecutive wins against Maryland.

Up next, the 'Cats return to Lakeside Field in Evanston to host No. 14 Michigan and No. 12 Ohio State. Northwestern hosts Michigan (8-4, 3-2 Big Ten) on Friday, Oct. 24, slated to start at 3 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network. On Sunday, Oct. 26, the Wildcats take on the Buckeyes (7-6, 3-2 Big Ten) at noon CT, streaming on B1G+.
