Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader to Open Dual Season

1/17/2025 10:47:00 PM | Men's Tennis

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis started their 2025 dual season with a pair of victories on Friday in Combe Tennis Center, defeating UIC 4-3 in the season opener before sweeping Saint Joseph's, 7-0, in the nightcap.

After UIC (0-1) won the doubles point to start the day's action, Northwestern quickly evened the score with a singles victory at the No. 3 position. Saiprakash Goli, who spent the majority of the 2024 season at No. 3 as well, wrapped up a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory to bring the team score level at one apiece.

Felix Nordby and Chad Miller, both playing at the highest singles placements of their collegiate careers, then added on with victories of their own. At No. 2 singles, Nordby won 6-4, 6-4. His win was followed by Miller's (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) at No. 5 singles.

Sophomore Greyson Casey, playing No. 1 singles for the 'Cats, provided the match-deciding point with a three-set victory over UIC's Artem Alekseychuk. Casey had never appeared higher than the No. 5 position heading into the day, but his 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory at the top spot secured Northwestern its first win of dual season.

The action continued for head coach Arvid Swan's squad a few hours later against Saint Joseph's (0-2). Goli and Miller picked up a quick 6-3 doubles victory, but the Hawks won a 6-3 victory of their one on the first court. The first point came down to No. 3 doubles, where Nick Herdoiza and Vincent Yang came up clutch for Northwestern. The pairing came out on top of a 7-5 tiebreak to secure the 7-6 doubles victory and give Northwestern the first lead of the evening, 1-0.

From there, all six singles matches ended in the Wildcats' favor. Max Bengtsson was the first to the finish line, claiming 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. He was followed by Goli, who picked up his second singles win of the day (6-3, 6-1), and first year Yang, who secured his first collegiate singles victory and match point at the No. 6 position, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

After the 'Cats clinched, Miller brought himself to 2-0 in singles play with another three-set victory, then Nordby and Casey each won super tiebreaks to complete the 7-0 Northwestern sweep over Saint Joseph's.

With the doubleheader sweep in the bag, Northwestern will hit the road for another non-conference match on Monday. The 'Cats will visit Louisville to face off with the Cardinals at 11 a.m. CT to complete their opening weekend slate.
