‘Cats feature as part of field that features 15 nationally ranked teams

EVANSTON, Ill. (September 26, 2024) – Fresh off achieving its highest national ranking in program history, Northwestern cross country will turn its attention north to Madison, Wis. on Friday for the prestigious Nuttycombe Invitational.

Action in the women's 6k championship race at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course, which will also serve as the host site of this November's NCAA Cross Country Championships, is slated to get underway at 12:20 p.m.  Links to watch on B1G+ and follow live results are available above.

Currently sitting at No. 24 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll, Northwestern will be one of 15 ranked teams set to feature on Friday.  That group is led by a pair of Big Ten Conference newcomers in Oregon and Washington, who are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in the national poll.

The 'Cats, who also sit atop the USTFCCCA's Midwest Region Rankings for the first time, are coming off a dominant showing at the Big Ten Conference Preview back on September 13 in Champaign, Ill.  Led by three finishers inside the top five, Northwestern took home the team title at the event, finishing 23 points clear of runner-up No. 19 Wisconsin.

Every member of the Wildcat top five set a new 6k personal best at the Orange and Blue Golf Course, a quintet that was paced by Ava Earl, who raced through in 20:17.3 to finish third overall.  Earl was joined in the top five by the pairing of Holly Smith (4th; 20:20.8) and Ava Criniti (5th; 20:32.9), the latter of whom took over a minute off her previous top time at the distance.

After returning from Madison, Northwestern will be in action close to home when it sends a group of student-athletes to the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Friday, October 4 in Chicago, Ill.
