Northwestern places 18th in loaded field featuring 15 ranked teams

MADISON, Wis. (September 27, 2024) – Competing amidst a field that boasted 15 nationally ranked sides, Chloe Wellings and Holly Smith led the attack for No. 24 Northwestern cross country this afternoon at the prestigious Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis.

The 'Cats placed 18th (422 points) in the final team standings, finishing in front of Michigan (19th; 458 points) and No. 30 Iowa State (20th; 471 points).  No. 5 Washington claimed the team title with 110 points, while Villanova's Sadie Sigfstead (19:55.7) brought home the individual crown.

Wellings and Smith finished just over five seconds apart today in the 6k championship race at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.  Out of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Wellings was the first Wildcat across the line, checking in 61st at 21:06.8, while Smith, a native of Cheshire, England, came through in 21:11.9 to claim 70th.

As was the case with Northwestern top two finishers, the pairing Ava Earl and Ava Criniti were closely separated.  Fresh off a third-place finish at the Big Ten Conference Preview earlier this month, Earl ran 21:19.8 (84th).  Criniti, who was just removed from a 6k personal best, was close behind in 21:20.9 (87th).  Katherine Hessler closed out the Wildcat top five, crossing in 21:38.7 (122nd).

Northwestern returns to action close to home on Friday, October 4 at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
